Changing your Ascendancy in Path of Exile 2 is a lot less painful than starting a second character, but it still takes some planning. You keep your base class, character level, campaign progress, gear, and regular passive tree, so the switch can save a huge amount of time. You'll need the right Trial and enough gold to refund your current Ascendancy points, though. It's also worth keeping a reserve of POE 2 Currency nearby, because your new setup may need different weapons, armour, gems, or crafted upgrades once the change is complete.
Know the Limits Before You Start
The system gives you freedom within your chosen base class, not between every class in the game. A Mercenary can move between the Ascendancies available to Mercenaries, for example, but can't switch into a Witch or Warrior Ascendancy. That part of your character is permanent. Your level and story progress also stay exactly where they are. The same goes for your equipment and ordinary passive skills, although you may still want to refund some of those passives if the new Ascendancy supports a different playstyle. This is where many players get caught out: changing the specialisation is possible, but changing the character's foundation isn't.
Complete the Trial That Matches Your Progress
You'll need to complete an appropriate Ascendancy Trial before you can make the switch. Depending on where your character is in the game, that may mean the Trial of Chaos or the Trial of the Sekhemas. The required difficulty is tied to the number of Ascendancy points you've already earned. In plain terms, a character with more points usually has to clear a higher-tier version of the Trial. Don't assume that an easy early run will unlock every option. Check your current Ascendancy progress first, then prepare for the version that matches it. If you haven't run the Trial for a while, take a moment to review its hazards and rewards before spending your time on an attempt.
Use the Trial NPC and Check the Gold Cost
After you finish the Trial, stay in the reward area and speak with the relevant NPC instead of rushing straight out. The dialogue includes the option to refund your existing Ascendancy points and choose another specialisation from your base class. There's a gold charge for each point, and the total can be surprisingly high. You can check it before entering the Trial by visiting the Hooded One or Doryani and opening the passive respec screen. Hover over an allocated Ascendancy passive to see the refund price for one point, then multiply that figure by the number of points you've spent. This simple check prevents an irritating situation: completing the Trial, reaching the altar, and discovering that you're short of gold.
Prepare the Build Before You Confirm
Respeccing the Ascendancy doesn't automatically turn your character into a finished build. A new specialisation may favour another weapon type, different defensive layers, or a completely different set of support gems. Before confirming anything, look at the equipment you plan to use and make sure the important requirements are covered. Check attributes, resistances, socket layouts, and damage scaling. You might also need to adjust nearby passive nodes after the Ascendancy change. Keeping replacement gear in your stash is often better than trying to buy everything after the switch. Set aside gold for the refund, then budget for crafting, rerolling modifiers, and replacing items that no longer fit. A small preparation step can save several frustrating mapping sessions.
Make the New Setup Playable
Ascendancy swapping works best when you treat it as a rebuild rather than a single button press. Test the new combination in a safe area, check your defences, and make sure your main skill still has the support it needs. You may find that the new Ascendancy feels weaker at first because the old gear was doing more work than expected. Give yourself room to make a few adjustments. Keep some spare currency for those changes, including cheap POE 2 Exalted Orbs when a weapon or armour piece needs a quick upgrade. With the Trial completed, the gold ready, and the replacement setup planned, you can experiment without throwing away a character you've already invested dozens of hours into.
