Most people choose a chauffeur vehicle first and think about the booking type second. That is backwards. In Dubai, the way you structure the booking, as a single transfer, an hourly hire or a full-day package, often affects your final cost more than the car itself. A well-chosen booking type can save hundreds of dirhams. A poorly chosen one can leave you paying for hours you never used, or watching the meter run on a schedule that was always going to overrun.
This guide explains the three main booking types, shows the simple arithmetic for choosing between hourly and full-day hire, and gives you a checklist to confirm before you accept any quotation.
The Three Booking Types in Plain Language
Point-to-point transfer. One pickup, one destination, and the chauffeur is released when you arrive. This is the right choice for airport arrivals and departures, or a single hotel-to-office run. The price is fixed per journey, which makes it the easiest to budget.
Hourly hire. The car and driver are yours for a set number of hours, with as many stops as you can fit in. The chauffeur waits while you attend a meeting, shop or dine, then takes you to the next place. Hourly hire usually has a minimum duration, so confirm it when you enquire.
Full-day hire. A fixed package price for a longer block of time, typically built around a full working or sightseeing day. It is one vehicle, one chauffeur and one price, without recalculating at every stop.
The common mistake is booking a point-to-point transfer for a day that actually has four stops, then re-booking at each one. Each new booking means a new price and a new wait, and nobody is holding your car.
The Break-Even Test: Hourly vs Full-Day
Here is a quick way to decide. Divide the full-day price by the hourly rate. The result is the number of hours at which the two options cost the same. If you expect to need fewer hours than that, hourly is cheaper. If you expect more, the full-day package wins.
Using the starting rates published on our fleet page:
Two things stand out. First, the larger and more premium the vehicle, the earlier the full-day package pays off. With a Sprinter, anything beyond four hours favours the package. With the Lexus, you can stay on hourly hire for most of a working day. Second, these figures are a guide only. Always confirm how many hours the full-day package covers, because a package built around a long day, such as ten hours, only makes sense if you will genuinely use most of it. Ask for both figures in writing and compare them against your real itinerary.
Three Real-World Scenarios
The executive with four meetings. A visiting executive has meetings in DIFC, Business Bay and Downtown, followed by a dinner. Gaps between meetings are unpredictable. A full-day or long hourly booking keeps one car and driver on standby, so there is no waiting for a new ride after each meeting. A sedan such as the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class suits one or two passengers, and the break-even table above shows when the package becomes better value.
The afternoon of shopping. A family wants three or four hours at Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. This is a classic hourly booking. The driver waits, the bags go into the boot as you shop, and you avoid car parks in the afternoon heat. An SUV or V-Class gives you room for both passengers and purchases.
The airport arrival. A guest lands at DXB and goes straight to a hotel. Nothing about this needs hours. A fixed-price point-to-point transfer, with the flight number supplied in advance, is simpler and usually cheaper than an hourly booking.
Avoiding Surprise Charges
The booking type matters, but the details inside the quotation matter just as much. Before you confirm, check that the written quotation answers these questions:
- Is the price fixed for the itinerary you described?
- Which exact vehicle or category is being supplied?
- What is the minimum booking duration for hourly hire?
- Is there a mileage limit?
- What is the overtime rate if the day runs long?
- How much waiting time is included, especially for airport pickups?
- Are fuel, Salik tolls and standard parking included, or charged separately?
- Are additional stops covered?
- What are the change and cancellation terms?
If a quotation leaves any of these unclear, ask before you pay. A good provider will put the answers in writing.
Why Luggage Belongs in the Booking Conversation
Booking type and vehicle choice interact. A vehicle with seven seats does not necessarily carry seven people and seven suitcases. Before you finalise, tell the booking team how many adults and children are travelling, how many large and small bags you have, and whether you need child seats or a stroller space. This avoids the common situation where the right booking type is paired with a car that is too small on the day.
Inter-Emirate Trips Are a Different Calculation
Do not estimate a trip to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Al Ain by multiplying an hourly rate. Long routes are better quoted as fixed, route-specific prices that reflect distance, waiting and whether you want the driver to stay at the destination or return for a later pickup. Describe the full plan, including any return leg, when you request the quote.
Quick Decision Guide
- One address to one address? Book a point-to-point transfer.
- Several stops and unpredictable timing? Choose hourly or full-day hire.
- Fewer hours than the break-even figure? Stay hourly.
- More hours than the break-even figure? Take the full-day package.
- Leaving Dubai? Ask for a route-specific fixed quote.
- Unsure? Send your itinerary and ask for both options in writing.
