The FRM full form is Financial Risk Manager. It is a professional certification awarded by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) for people who work in financial risk management.

What it means

Banks, insurers, asset managers and companies take risks every day: markets move, borrowers default, systems fail. A Financial Risk Manager identifies, measures and manages those risks.

Who awards it

GARP is the awarding body. TWSS is a preparation provider, so the certification itself comes from GARP after you pass the exams and meet the experience requirement.

What the FRM course covers

Part I covers risk foundations, quantitative analysis, financial markets and products, and valuation and risk models. Part II covers market, credit, operational and liquidity risk, investment management and current issues. See the full FRM course details.

Common confusions

  1. FRM is not the same as CFA, which stands for Chartered Financial Analyst.

  2. It is a certification, not a university degree.

  3. It focuses on risk, not accounting or audit.

Who takes it

Finance, economics, maths and engineering graduates, bankers, analysts, CFA, CA and MBA candidates moving towards risk.
