The generation of monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies against hapten targets has some problems not encountered with larger antigens. Small molecules are low molecular weight molecules of less than 2-5 kDa and not immunogenic because they lack epitopes that could be recognized by T cells to elicit an immune response, even in the presence of adjuvant by their nature.
